What to look for in buying jewelry?
Gold
The jewelry manufactured as Canine Couture is produced in 14kt yellow or white gold. We will sometimes produce a piece in 18kt depending on the order or the design of the jewelry. What does 14kt mean? Gold is not usually manufactured as a pure metal because it is too soft to withstand the stresses of everyday wear. So, alloys (silver, copper, zinc and nickel) are added to give the metal strength and durability. KT stands for the purity of a piece or how much gold percentage is in the jewelry item. Gold comes as 24kt , too soft for jewelry, 22kt very soft and usually not recommended for jewelry, 18kt, recommended for fine jewelry and 14kt recommended for jewelry. Some jewelry is manufactured in 12kt and 10kt but not generally recommended. The price of jewelry is based on the current market value of gold and the kt weight of the piece as well as design.
Diamonds
Everyone has heard about the 4 C’s of buying diamonds, if you haven’t heard you need to read this. Educating yourself about diamonds will help you to be an informed buyer. The 4 C’s stand for cut, color, clarity and carat weight. How a diamond is cut will be the one factor giving the diamond it’s brilliance. Even diamonds of poor color or clarity will sparkle with a good cut. Diamonds are graded on a scale indicating the lack of color, diamonds with little color are the most valuable. Clarity of a diamond is based on the number and size of inclusions found in the diamond. Carat weight indicates the weight of a diamond and it is measured in carats. There are 100 points in a one carat diamond (1.00cts). A half carat stone is 50 points (0.50cts). A quarter carat stone is 25 points (0.25cts). Larger diamonds are more rare then smaller stones and so the prices will rise with size. Buying a stone within your budget that comes closest to these 4 essential requirements will help you be assured of purchasing a diamond that you will be happy with for years. All of the diamonds set in our jewelry are full brilliant cut, FGH in color and vs clarity.
Gem Stones
Colored gemstones is my love. I love good quality colored gemstones more than diamonds. They offer so much variety and beauty. A world class gemstone of sapphire, emerald or ruby can be incredibly rare and priceless. All of our gemstones are natural colored stones. We specialize in ruby and sapphire of all colors (pink, yellow and blues). The basics of diamond grading are comparable in gemstone selection as well. A good cut, a true uniform color throughout the stone, clarity of the stone and of course weight all come together to bring the brilliance and beauty of the stone to life. One of my creative delights is an unexpected splash of color on a design. Take a look at my Chewy Bone Pendants with a diamond on one side and the reverse with a colored gemstone.
Design
I am a traditional jeweler. I was trained in California. I apprenticed in New York. My preference has always been classic and traditional jewelry. But, one of the delights of custom jewelry has been to incorporate the clients desires and ideas into a beautiful piece of jewelry. There is so much to design and so little time!! It would be my pleasure to help bring to life your unique designs.
Please give us a call (913-648-4381) if you have special designs or breeds in mind for custom jewelry. We would be pleased to advise and work with you in bringing your ideas to life.
Thank you,
Anthony Sanchez
